Red onions are rich in quercetin, a flavonoid that has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory research. Scientists are also studying its potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.
Researchers at the University of Guelph found that one variety of Ontario-grown red onion showed particularly strong effects against colon cancer cells in laboratory experiments. While initial findings show promise, researchers need to conduct further studies to determine whether the results of lab experiments can be replicated in humans.
In the basic review of analyzing how successful Ontario-developed onions are at killing malignant growth cells, the University of Guelph analysts have observed that not all onions are equivalent. Of all the five types of onions grown in Ontario, the ruby red variety; came on top.
Onions contain several naturally occurring compounds, including quercetin and other flavonoids, that have attracted interest for their potential health effects.
