Infants Now Cancer Free After Experimental Gene-editing Treatment

By Dr. Abdulla El Hossami and Dr. Adem Günes

Cancer remains to be one of the world’s biggest killers. The World Health Organisation estimates that one out of every six deaths worldwide is attributed to cancer. At present, there is no “one shoe fits all” treatment for cancer. The lack of a universal cure is considered to be one of the reasons behind cancer’s pervasiveness. Managing the various forms of the disease requires highly specific treatments that take into consideration a wide number of factors not limited to the type of cancer alone.

New Cancer Treatment
A new treatment method currently being developed by Cellectis, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company shows a glimmer of promise in being able to universally take on cancer. Doctors from the Great Ormond Street Hospital located in London have been able to successfully administer the treatment on two infants who were diagnosed with an aggressive variant of Leukemia. The usage of the treatment was documented in Science Translational Medicine, an award-winning scientific journal. The doctors reported a remission of cancer in the two infants and that they had been cancer-free for 16 and 18 months respectively.

The doctors utilised two cutting-edge treatments, namely, Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cell (CAR T) The former is the method developed by Cellectis empowers a patient’s immune system to fight against cancer. This is done with the help of specialised immune cells known as T Cells. These are extracted from a patient’s blood and are imbued with Chimeric Antigen Receptors. When finished, the CAR T cells are reintroduced into the patient’s blood. From there, they attach onto tumours and destroy them. This method has proven effective for blood cancers in prior studies.

The second treatment utilised was gene-editing methodology dubbed TALENS. It is a tool which enables the direct manipulation of a person’s genes. This was used to further alter the extracted T Cells from the patients to tailor fit the final treatment for their needs.

Despite the incredible promise of these treatments, however, scientists point out that it is difficult to fully attribute the children’s’ remission to the experimental treatment. The infants had already received Chemotherapy and Stem Cell transplants, which may have also affected the cancer cells.

Future Potential
The combination of TALENS and CAR T still does hold potential. However, for now, it will require further study. At present, the combination is extremely expensive and still requires refinement. Eventually, the combination may lead to a definite cure for cancer.

Today, more people are opting to explore non-conventional and experimental cancer treatments. The absence of a guaranteed positive outcome as well as the myriad of potential side effects and complications make conventional treatments such as Chemotherapy and Radiation undesirable for many. Integrative Treatments, for example, utilise a variety of procedures intended to kill cancer without the damage to normal bodily functions.
