Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a disease in which cells in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina, grow out of control. Almost all cervical cancers are caused by long-lasting infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Most are squamous cell carcinomas; a smaller number are adenocarcinomas.

01 / Overview

About cervical cancer

Also known as: cancer of the cervix, cervical squamous cell carcinoma, cervical adenocarcinoma.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that affects the cells of the cervix in women. Like many cancers there are many stages of the disease, from early stage cervical cancer to advanced or metastatic conditions. Medical treatments for those living with cervical cancer might involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and/or targeted therapies, depending on the stage in which the cancer has progressed.

At Verita Life we aim to provide services that work alongside and support your current medical treatments. We create a personalised programme for each individual patient, tailored to your medical history, current treatments, imaging, stage, and overall health goals.

02 / Types

Cervical Cancer types

As with all cancer types, cervical cancer varies by stage and spread. At Verita Life we support a wide range of cervical cancers, including:

  • Early stage cervical cancer

a type of cervical cancer that is confined to the cervix and can potentially be cured through surgery.
  • Local advanced cervical cancer

cervical cancer that has spread from the cervix to surrounding tissues and lymph nodes.
  • Metastatic cervical cancer

cervical cancer that has spread to other organs such as the liver or lungs.
  • Recurrent cervical cancer

cervical cancer that has returned after previous treatment or a period of remission.

03 / Symptoms

Cervical Cancer symptoms

Early cervical cancer and the cell changes that come before it usually cause no symptoms, which is why screening finds most cases. When symptoms appear they can include:

  • Vaginal bleeding after sex, between periods, or after the menopause
  • Periods that are heavier or longer than normal
  • Vaginal discharge that is watery, has a strong odour, or contains blood
  • Pelvic pain, or pain during sex
  • Difficult or painful urination, or blood in the urine
  • A dull backache, swelling of the legs, or pain in the abdomen
  • Feeling tired

These symptoms are often caused by conditions other than cervical cancer. Unusual bleeding should always be checked.

04 / Stages

Cervical Cancer stages

The stage describes how far the cancer has grown beyond the cervix. It is worked out from examination, scans, and sometimes tissue removed at surgery.

Stage I is confined to the cervix. Stage II has grown beyond the cervix into the upper vagina or nearby tissue. Stage III has reached the lower vagina, the pelvic wall, or nearby lymph nodes, or is blocking a kidney. Stage IV has spread to the bladder or rectum, or to distant organs.

Stages we support: Stage I, Stage II, Stage III, Stage IV, Metastatic.

05 / Conventional care

Conventional treatment

Cervical cancer treatment depends on the stage, the type, whether you wish to have children in the future, and your overall health. A gynaecological oncology team plans it. Verita Life does not replace this care. Our therapies are designed to support it.

Surgery

Ranges from removing a cone of cervical tissue for very early cancers, to a hysterectomy that removes the uterus and cervix, with nearby lymph nodes checked.

Radiation therapy

External beams and internal radiation (brachytherapy), usually combined with chemotherapy, the main treatment for cancers that have grown beyond the cervix.

Chemotherapy

Medicines that kill fast-growing cells, given with radiation to make it work better, or as the main treatment for cancer that has spread.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy

Medicines that block the blood supply to the tumour, or help the immune system attack it, used for advanced or recurrent disease.

Treatments and therapies

Treatment for cervical cancer care at Verita Life

Verita Life’s integrative cervical cancer treatments incorporate medically-backed traditional therapies with holistic therapies designed to complement conventional care. Our cervical cancer treatments include:

Metronomic Therapy
Metronomic chemotherapy is an approach to cancer treatment in which chemotherapy is given at a lower dose, but more frequently and with shorter or no extended breaks between treatments.
Metabolic Treatment
Metabolic approaches investigate how cancer cells obtain and use energy and nutrients. Cancer cells behave very differently to healthy cells, often heavily relying on glucose and alter their metabolic pathways in order to grow more rapidly than healthy cells. This is a broad area of research, not a single established treatment or diet and at Verita Life we use metabolic approaches within our wider, personalised treatment plans.
Local Body Hyperthermia
Local body hyperthermia is a type of integrative therapy designed to work alongside both integrative oncology care and conventional cancer treatments. Local body hyperthermia is a targeted heat-based therapy that delivers controlled heat to specific areas of the body.
IPT & Low-Dose Chemotherapy
Insulin potentiation therapy, or IPT, uses insulin alongside lower doses of chemotherapy as part of an integrative cancer treatment approach.
Herbal Cancer Therapy
Following years of research, our medical team have developed specific herbal treatment protocols to address varying types of tumours. We use proven compounds that stem from all natural herbal ingredients such as curcumin, quercetin and other anti-cancer therapies.
Biological Treatment
Biological treatments are supportive regimens that can sometimes fall under immunotherapy due to their nature, and work by harnessing the body's natural immune system or targeting precise molecular pathways involved in cancer growth.
Natural Killer Cell Therapy
Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte, or white blood cell, that play a major role in the immune system by targeting and killing infected cells and cancer cells.

The treatments below are used across cancer types. Which ones apply to you is decided in your consultation.

08 / Questions

Questions patients ask

Where does cervical cancer develop?

Cervical cancer begins in the cervix, where the lower part of the uterus joins the vagina. The main types are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.

Source: National Cancer Institute

Does having HPV mean I have cervical cancer?

No. HPV infection is common and often clears on its own. Persistent infection with certain high-risk HPV types can cause changes that may lead to cervical cancer. An HPV result by itself is not a cancer diagnosis.

What should I discuss before cervical cancer treatment?

Ask how the cancer’s stage, your health, and your preferences affect the plan. Discuss possible side effects and fertility concerns before treatment begins so our medical team can explain the available options.
