Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Lung cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the cells of the lungs, specifically in the linings of the bronchi (tubes that leads to lungs) and parts of the lung. The two common types of lung cancer are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
The more common type is NSCLC, accounting for approximately 80-85% of lung cancers, while SCLC accounts for 10-15% of lung cancers. Both types of lung cancers are treated differently. Lung cancer is more common for older people, especially for those that are 65 or older. The most common risk factor for lung cancer is smoking, which accounts for 80% of death caused by lung cancer.
Exposure to secondhand smoke and cancer-causing agents in the environment and workplace, such as radon and asbestos, can also increase the risk of developing lung cancer.
