Understanding Kidney Cancer
Kidney Cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with approximately 330,000 diagnosed cases across the world each year. It is broken down into four different types: the renal cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, the sarcoma and the Wilms’ Tumour – the latter condition being most predominant in children.
The most documented and important risk factor in Kidney Cancer is smoking, which has been linked to approximately 30 per cent of the cases diagnosed per year. Other factors can range from age and race, family history, nutrition and abuse of some over the counter medication such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
Another possible link that has been researched is exposure to cadmium, which is found in batteries, paints and welding supplies, to name a few.
Most Common Symptoms
Kidney Cancer symptoms tend to be quite specific. Fatigue, anemia and high blood pressure are common signs. Physical symptoms can include a mass or lump in the side or the back, swelling in the ankles or the legs, pain in the side or the back and blood in the urine.
Another specific indicator in men is the development of a cluster of enlarged veins around a testicle, which is called varicocele.
