Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma
Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma is an extremely rare type of blood cancer that originates from follicular dendritic cells, a type of speciliased cells of the immune system. The most common type of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is nodal cancer, which originates in the lymph nodes.
Lymph nodes are small glands in the lymphatic system that contain lymphocytes (white blood cells), which helps the body to fight against infection. Follicular dendritic cells sarcomas that originate outside of the lymph nodes, in areas such as head and neck, digestive system, spleen or liver, are called extranodal tumours.
They account for about 30% of follicular dendritic cell sarcomas.
