Doctors from the Great Ormond Street Hospital located in London have been able to successfully administer the treatment on two infants who were diagnosed with an aggressive variant of Leukemia. The usage of the treatment was documented in Science Translational Medicine, an award-winning scientific journal. The doctors reported a remission of cancer in the two infants and that they had been cancer-free for 16 and 18 months respectively.

The doctors utilised two cutting-edge treatments, namely, Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cell (CAR T) The former is the method developed by Cellectis empowers a patient’s immune system to fight against cancer. This is done with the help of specialised immune cells known as T Cells. These are extracted from a patient’s blood and are imbued with Chimeric Antigen Receptors. When finished, the CAR T cells are reintroduced into the patient’s blood. From there, they attach onto tumours and destroy them. This method has proven effective for blood cancers in prior studies.

The second treatment utilised was gene-editing methodology dubbed TALENS. It is a tool which enables the direct manipulation of a person’s genes. This was used to further alter the extracted T Cells from the patients to tailor fit the final treatment for their needs.

Despite the incredible promise of these treatments, however, scientists point out that it is difficult to fully attribute the children’s’ remission to the experimental treatment. The infants had already received Chemotherapy and Stem Cell transplants, which may have also affected the cancer cells.

Future Potential

The combination of TALENS and CAR T still does hold potential. However, for now, it will require further study. At present, the combination is extremely expensive and still requires refinement. Eventually, the combination may lead to a definite cure for cancer.
